Common Emergencies We See

• Broken or Chipped Teeth — Chipping a tooth is something that happens quite often, especially in children or people who are active in sport. If the fragment is large, try to locate it and store it covered in saline or milk. It may be possible to bond the fractured piece back into place if we see you quickly enough. Smaller chips are usually smoothed out or bonded over.
• strong>Knocked Out Tooth — Quickly locate your tooth and gently rinse away any debris, being careful not to touch or scrub the root. If possible, you can attempt to reinsert it into the socket (but don’t force it). Otherwise, immerse it in saline, saltwater or milk and bring it directly to our office.
• Toothaches or Abscesses — Tooth pain can be quite severe. Take an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen to alleviate swelling. Applying a cool compress to the side of your face may also help. Some toothaches are caused by sinus infections, while others are due to active decay or a dental abscess. It’s important to schedule an exam as soon as possible, before the source of the infection has an opportunity to get worse or spread.
• Loose Filling or Crown — If you develop new decay around an existing crown or filling, it can cause your restoration to come loose. Do not attempt to glue it back, as it can trap infection underneath. In most cases we will need to replace it altogether. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until you’re able to make it to our office to have the tooth repaired.
• Bleeding Gums — Gingival bleeding can be caused from anything from traumatic injuries to gum disease. Keep the area clean, applying firm pressure for several minutes to the site that’s bleeding. Be sure to let us know if you’re taking any medications (such as blood thinners).
