When you have multiple missing teeth and need an economical option to replace them, dentures are a great solution. A custom denture is usually more affordable than getting several bridges or dental implants.
What to Expect
Getting dentures usually requires about four visits to Adelaide Dental Spa to complete from start to finish. Over the course of each one, weโll measure your jaw, take impressions of your teeth and record how they bite together. Weโll also want to match the colour of your natural teeth, especially if youโre getting a partial denture (so that it blends in with your surrounding smile). The process typically takes anywhere from 4-8 weeks.
A denture isnโt just more affordable when it comes to replacing missing teeth, itโs also noninvasive. So if you feel anxious about having teeth replaced or extracted, getting a denture made is a relatively fearless procedure. The only time anything is needed besides impressions taken is if there are infected teeth that need to be extracted before you can wear the denture. In those instances, weโll fully numb the area with local anaesthetic.
When you need to replace all of your teeth, a full denture (or โplateโ) is the restoration of choice. These prosthetics rest directly on top of your gingiva and are usually made from an acrylic base. On top of the pink material are custom designed teeth, matched to the shape and colour of your preferences.
However, full partials are only used if you need to restore all of the teeth in an arch. If you still have several healthy teeth, itโs not necessary to extract them. Instead, we can fit you with a partial denture that clips in around the teeth youโre able to retain. The unique design helps your partial feel more secure throughout the day. Depending on how many teeth need to be replaced, partials usually have a cobalt chrome or acrylic base.
If you need dentures quickly and are scared of having to go without teeth, it may be possible to perform a procedure that we call โimmediateโ or same-day dentures. These prostheses are designed by taking a mould of your mouth and sending it to our lab in advance of any extractions. When itโs returned, we can schedule you to have problematic teeth removed and place the denture on the same day. Youโll want to wait for at least 24 hours before taking it out.
The one downside to an immediate denture is that weโll need to adjust it a bit after your mouth recovers from the extractions. Since your bone shape can change, it will alter the fit of your prosthesis. This process can lead to sore spots or a loose denture. We might even recommend an interim temporary denture, then replace it with a quality prosthesis after your mouth is fully healed.
